Jedi For Jesus?

By Lane Palmer

I know that from a human standpoint, life can sometimes seem boring. . .

Dare 2 Share - For we are not fighting against people made of flesh and blood, but against the evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against those mighty powers of darkness who rule this world, and against wicked spirits in the heavenly realms. (Ephesians 6:12)

The much anticipated and highly publicized “Episode II: Attack of the Clones” was released this past week, bringing long lines and big bucks to the theatrical world.

What is so appealing about this series? Well, first of all- there is something for everyone. Action, adventure, romance, humor, and great effects combine to make the Star Wars series one of the best of all time.

Yet I believe there is a more profound level of allure that comes from these movies, something that speaks to the deepest part of us: being a hero.

Perhaps not everyone would admit it, but there is a widespread desire in people to ‘save the day’ in one sense or another. To rescue friends in need, fight valiantly, and defeat an evil empire is an imaginary scenario in which most would gladly engage. That’s why we don’t mind forking over the huge bucks at the movie theaters!

I know that from a human standpoint, life can sometimes seem boring. . . we don’t have galactic spaceships, just UFO sightings. No pod races, just NASCAR. No light sabers, just steak knives. No evil empire, just the Taliban.

Yet from a spiritual angle, we as believers are part of something that makes Star Wars seem like a Barney adventure.

Sure, we don’t live in a world where people are inhabited by “mitichlorians” (or whatever) that give them power to do awesome flips and throw objects with their minds. However, as believers we have something that is far superior to anything Hollywood could dream up. Check this out:

Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

The very presence of the Almighty God Himself lives within believers through the Holy Spirit. Not an impersonal “force” or energy, but a Person who just happens to be God! He lives inside of us so that we can fulfill His purposes for the world.

What are His purposes? Nothing less than taking back His stolen Kingdom from the forces of darkness.

We don’t fight with light sabers, but we wield the very Word of God, which is “sharper than any two-edged sword” (Hebrews 4:12). We aren’t communicating with the Jedi High Council, but we have the attentive ear of the High King of Heaven (James 5:15-17).

So how exciting is your Christian life? If it seems boring compared to “Star Wars”, then maybe you need a reality check. The reality is that God lives inside you and wants to use you. Your place in this world is not by accident, it is part of a divine plan. You are gifted, talented, equipped, and trained far better than any Jedi Knight- for you are a holy soldier. The war you wage isn’t for rebel freedom, it’s for Jesus’ Kingdom. You aren’t acting for an academy award; you’re living for an eternal reward!

Questions:

1) What part do you play in advancing God’s Kingdom?

2) What role in the battle has God given you? Prayer warrior? Witnessing machine? Significant servant?

3) In what specific ways can you join the battle?
